Turn based squad games

Daddy-skApr 17, 7:25am
Need help:
I've been playing (and loving!) turn-based squad games for a very long time.
Those are the kind of games in which you control small amount of (often very different and developing in semi-RPG style) units battling in un-real time (ie in turns) against the not-so great amounts of enemy units, having several options about what action to take against your enemies and all the time in the world to think them through.

Some examples:
Laser Squad
UFO (X-COM)
Incubation
Jagged Alliance
Silent Storm

Some games that do not fit into this category:
Commandos
Wesnoth
Civilization

The problem:
I'm out of these games! I starting to think I've played them all :( So, if anyone could suggest any game that fits the description and is not sequel to any of the mentioned games, I would be extremely grateful!
I'm pretty PC based, so only games which can run or be emulated on PC count.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_Wars [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_Wars]

it's on gameboy though, just get a emulator and the rom if you don't hava a gameboy

Incubation rocked :) I loved advance wars too, it's very basic compared to some of the pc games you mentioned, but it's a lot of fun. Some other ones..

Shattered union - A lot like advance wars, but it's not great
Domination - It's not small squad based, so maybe not right for you
Fallout tactics - Again not exactly what your after, but it's close

And I think titans of steel, that's more RPG than turn-based though. I think you've pretty much listed the top 5 there, maybe check out some of there more obscure sequels/add-ons if you haven't allready.

Ohh, it looks like jagged alliance 3 might actually be coming as well, in autumn this year according to wikipedia. I'm not holding my breath though.

Rome Total War,
Medieval Total War,
i only played rome, fab gfx, gameplay; you need to be tactically clever re what counteracts what, e.g. infantry counters cavalry etc, there are many different units (legions) in a battle and elephants and wardogs,
it is turn-based strategy and real-time tactics

Thanks for the tips guys!
I've finished Incubation approx. 5th time last year, my situation is serious :)
Advance wars look good enough (I forgot to mention, I don't care about the simplicity as long as the game is challenging - after all, I've enjoyed Ancient Empires on my cell phone a lot)

As for Fallout tactics - I love Fallout and love tactics, but I couldn't get my self to enjoy this game enough... Maybe it was those ridiculously small mutants' heads or the fact that the game wasn't really meant to be played in turns.

Some people were suggesting The Temple of Elemental Evil, anyone here played that?
It should feature great tactical combat and full D&D RPG rules, which sounds good - my second favourite genre are the RPGs, so I like the combination. This means, I'm going to try Titans of Steel too.

And yes, I'm very interested if the JA3 will come up to expectatios...

#5 It's a bunch of russian programmers doing it ;) So expect it to be buggy for a few patches, and have no manual.

I've had to go and download incubation again as well...

final fantasy tactics? it's been a favorite of mine for 10 years

#4: If it's real-time combat we're talking about, that's exactly what I'm not looking for...

#6: There have been some top quality games released from Russia... But not from the particular company behind the JA3, as far as I know - you're right, we'd better not get overexcited yet.

#7: Looks interesting, I'll give it a try, thanks.

Temple of Elemental Evil - probably the most hardcore-tactical game I've played, many options to choose from when mauling foes. And it was (one of) the first game to implement AD&D 3 rules. Also loving the spheric music, great 2D backgrounds and 3D figures (good animation).
But I couldn't finish the game because in the higher levels, the game simply freezes for minutes, works, freezes again, works ... there's an active forum and there are patches available, from fans. I had no luck with these patches, but things must be different now with newer versions.

Silent Storm - pretty good game, feels "real", good physics and material simulation. But you have to be VERY patient and sit through seemingly endless turns.
